LADIES GOLF CLUBS

from:

The rules of golf allow a maximum of 14 clubs in your bag when you are playing a game.Each club is designed for a different purpose and will hit the ball a different distance.

Part of playing well is knowing which club will hit which distance. The distance is governed by the angle of the face of the club as it meets the ball - this is known as the loft.

Usually clubs have a number on the head by which they can be identified. The higher the number, the lesser the distance the club will hit. Each club has a grip made of rubber, a shaft made of steel or graphite and a club head made of steel or alloy parts.

Clubs are divided into 3 different types:-

* Woods

* Irons

* Putter

WOODS

These are named because the original clubheads were made of wood. These days club heads are made of steel or various alloys.

* Ladies woods can be from 1 to 15.

* Number 1 is called the driver and is used off the tee.

* Woods 3,4,5,7 and 9 are fairway woods.

* Numbers 11,13 and 15 are usually of a much higher loft and are used to make specific shots (more of this in another article).

IRONS

The club head is usually made of metal and numbered 1-9. Remember number 1 will hit further than number 9. Also remember that the higher the number the higher the ball will go.

There are also various wedges which come into this catagory, such as a pitching wedge and a sand wedge. Wedges are used to get a high degree of loft, and a sand wedge is used to escape from bunkers.

PUTTERS

A putter has almost no loft and is used on or just off the green when the ground is firm and smooth. There is an enormous variety of putters on the market. Which ever type feels right and produces the best results is the one for you.

HYBRID OR RESCUE CLUBS

These clubs are a combination of a wood and an iron, the hybrid or rescue club has become popular with the average club golfer. It's most often used to gain distance when the ball is in a tight lie and is more forgiving. Gaining in popularity it's not unusual to find at least one of these clubs in a ladies golf bag.

CLUB CARE

Most golfers put head covers on their woods to protect the heads and stop them clanking against each other when on the move. You should dry woods off carefully if they become wet, wiping off any grass, mud or sand which accumulates on the head.

When rubber grips become dirty they can be washed with soap and water. When they become shinny they are ready for a change and this can be done by your local professional.

CHOOSING CLUBS

The most important factor when you are choosing clubs is that you should feel comfortable with them and they feel right for you. It really is personal choice.

When you decide the time is right to buy some clubs, go to a place where they allow you to try out 4 or 5 different types of clubs.

You do not need to buy irons and woods of the same type or from the same manufacturer. Nor do you need to buy them all at the same time. Many players add different clubs at a later date, and buying a complete set is not always the best solution.

If you are just taking up the game, consider leaving the purchase of a driver until you have a little more experience. Initially just purchase a 3 or 5 wood. You may want to consider a half set of irons - 5,7,9,PW and SW - just to get the game going. You can always add more at a later date.
