Did You Ever Meet Meg Mallon?

from: Audrey Roberts

After having spent several days at the Weetabix British Ladies Open, I decided to take an hour out and avail myself of some of the bargains in the tented village. This then led me into the Professionals shop adjacent to the practice putting area.

As I thumbed through the rails avidly hoping they had my size I heard a very excited lady ask where Meg Mallon was .. She is on the floor in the corner... came the reply.

Thinking I was onto a scoop I was out from behind the rails of Ping and Cutter & Buck in a nano-second only to be faced by an equally startled, elderly, and dare I say somewhat portly Jack Russell Terrier.

As I bent down, if only to ensure I hadn't startled the poor thing to death, a very proud and cheery lady said ........This is Meg Mallon, I name all of my dogs after a player I particularly like...... I was grateful she had not been a fan of Virada Nirapathpongporn!

The Lady I mention is Sylvia Birchenough who is married to the Professional at Royal Lytham and St. Annes GC and indeed also runs the Pro-Shop. Sylvias first dog was named Babe Zaharis - who I hasten to add was long before Sylvia was around-, followed by Judy Rankin, Laura Baugh and currently Meg Mallon.

Meg herself I hear came in especially to meet her namesake and was very enamoured of this lovely little dog.

I have to say that both player and canine share the same attributes of talent, personality, politeness and endless patience - although I cannot help secretly wonder if Meg had wished her to be an elegant, slinky haired Afghan. Personally I love all the traits of a Jack Russell Terrier.

So if ever you happen to be visiting at Royal Lytham and St Annes GC, I certainly recommend you to take the opportunity of not only visiting the excellent Pro-Shop
run by Sylvia, but also introduce yourself to Meg Mallon .
