THE GOLFER AND THE BOXER

from: Audrey Roberts

We've always been the best of friends; my constant companion on thousands of shopping trips; with me on those emergency hospital visits; helped wrap and unwrap the presents every Christmas; stood guard on the oven whilst the turkey cooked; been through loads of family crisies and has been there to offer a head on my lap or an understand paw when I sobbed over sentimental movies on T.V. However it all changed when I took up golf a few years ago - the gloves were on............

Like many clubs we have a Ladies Day - ours happens to be a Tuesday. As I enthuasitcally dress in all the usual kit ready for my day, it starts.

Firstly come the deep sighs every couple of minutes. Then the destainful glances as every item of clothing goes on. If she can get a drink of water and casually brush against me, dripping water down my beautifully ironed golf trousers she is already 3 up with 15 to play.

One day there was an enormous crash from the garage where I keep my clubs; rushing out there she was surrounded by the entire contents of my golf bag. She had that 'it just fell on me' look Although the teeth marks in the side of the bag were a bit of a giveaway!

As I carefully carry my bag to the car and lie it on the back seat (in her car, in her place!) she stares at me with that 'how could you' look. We walk back together into the house and as I pick up my sweater and grab the keys, she walks oh so slowly, tail down, ears flat into her basket - how guilty can she make me feel ( up 5, 6 to play).

She sits facing the wall and I swear I saw her lip quiver. Over the months my favourite kola and tiger head covers have mysteriously found their way into her toy box, strangely each with a missing ear!

I leave the radio on for company and I cheerily say 'See you later, bee a good dog and look after the house'. The final look says it all. Lost 6 and 5.

When I come home all is forgiven and forgotten, we're the best of friends and lifelong companions once again - until next Tuesday!!
