Make More Putts With These 5 Simple Steps

from: Greg Beartoes

There are some secrets to success when on the putting green that you need to know. We are going to go over those here. One thing that you should do when you are putting is to try and keep your system and your routine just as simple as possible. This way there is less chance for error. You should have your own style when you are putting, and it should be that way I believe. This is the one part of the game that does allow you this, while the other parts of the game have some fundamentals that must be followed or things just don't go right.

There is really no right or wrong way on how to setup or stand over the ball. Then you have to try to keep all of the precise and mechanical thoughts out of the way. You want to think of the pace you want the ball to roll and how far right or left of the hole the ball should travel.

You have to start to think of your putting in this light. Your object when you are putting is to see how close you can get the ball to the hole. There is a good part about this method, if the ball goes in the hole, it is a bonus. Watching golf evolve over the years, there have been some very successful putters, that have had some very different styles.

These facts are telling you that it is OK to be yourself and do what is comfortable for you.

Let's learn some putting tips that are going to make you a better putter.

1.) One thing that you must understand, is that before you ever start your putting stroke, you must feel comfortable and be relaxed over the ball. When all of your muscles are tense, your grip pressure is too tight, you have to understand that your chances if making a successful putt are not very good. This is not what we want. So, first thing to remember is to stay relaxed.

2.) If you want to make more putts, you need to strike the ball in the middle of the putter face. You can usually hear and feel a solidly struck putt. This should be your #1 goal, to hit the ball in the middle of the putter face.

By the way, a lot of putts miss because they were not hit in the middle of the clubface. Not because you picked the wrong line or speed.

3.) One thing that I see people doing all the time is changing there putting style. Don't do this. Just try and hit the ball solid on every attempt. Hitting the ball solid will keep the ball on the intended line longer and this will give you a better chance of making more putts.

4.) One of the main keys is your tempo - back and through. It doesn't matter if your tempo is fast, slow or in between, just be consistent with it back and then through.

5.) You must stay down and thru the putt. Don't get anxious and want to see what the ball is doing. You don't need to. You must not PEEK. Have you ever noticed that when you look up too early, you usually watch the ball miss the hole. I know that is what happens when I look up or peek. Another reason that a lot of putts miss the cups is because you got anxious and you were quick at picking your head up.

What happens when you look up to soon is that you are not going to hit the ball where you want to in relation to the putter face. As mentioned earlier, you must hit the ball in the middle of the putter face. It is very natural for you to want to see where the ball is going. It is very common and even in the pro's. They just do it less than we do. Try this to help you to keep your head down longer. After you hit the ball, count to one. This will ensure that your head does not come up early.

If you watch Anika and Tiger, they could have a 5-10 ft putt, and their heads are barely coming up when the ball is going into the hole. That should tell you something right there. Keep that head down and the rest of the body will follow by also staying down.

Now you have some simple things that you can start to work on. Don't forget that your goal is to see how close you can get the ball to the hole, that all. Doing these 5 step will help you improve your putting.

Bison keep high-flying Bearkats out of end zone

Sam Houston State finally ran into a defense that played better than its own Saturday. In offensive coordinator Bob DeBesse’s final game as the Bearkats’ play-caller, the nation’s No. 1-scoring offense was largely ineffective against North Dakota State’s top-ranked scoring defense. Sam Houston fell 17-6 in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Game.

Give me a break, it is the silly season

AW, come on. TFF has been receiving a little chafe from readers, saying it is time to stop running these ''Best-ofs'' and "get back to bloody work!" And they may be right. SHSU hopes to counter North Dakota State’s size with speed — lots and lots of speed

Sam Houston State’s final game of this illustrious season is the ultimate matchup of strength versus speed. Just don’t tell the Bearkats about North Dakota State’s strength, or the Bison about Sam Houston’s speed. They’ve done their scouting reports and both teams know what the other brings to the table.
