Annika Sorenstam has convincingly shown that she is back to her pre injury form with a superb 7 shot victory at the Michelob ULTRA Open at Kingsmill. After starting the day with a three-stroke lead, Sorenstam proceeded to card a final-round 66 with seven birdies and just two bogies on her way to a tournament-record 19-under-par (64-66-69-66=265) for the week. In doing so, Sorenstam captured her 72nd career win and became the first LPGA player to surpass the $22 million mark in career earnings.
It’s never flawless with Sorenstam, who believes that it’s possible to make birdie at every hole in a round and shoot 54, but coming down the stretch she was very close. She had five birdies on the back nine, including three in a row, before a bogey on the final hole.
“Winning this tournament is just a wonderful feeling,” Sorenstam said “I think I feel just relieved, I feel at peace with myself knowing I can play this golf course.”
The victory was the Swede’s third in eight events this season, and in the process she also answered the doubters who said she could no longer play with new No. 1 Lorena Ochoa.
The eight-time player of the year pulled away from Ochoa on Saturday, using her typical steadiness for a 2-under 69, then did the same to Jang on Sunday, leaving no doubt that her injuries are behind her, and that her once-unrivaled game is almost all the way back.
“I’m very proud of the way I played this week and I’m very happy with the way I’ve been hitting especially my iron shots and I’ve been making a lot of the putts,” Sorenstam said.
Sorenstam is planning a January wedding to fiance Mike McGee, has opened her own golf academy and also developed an appreciation for playing golf when her back didn’t let her.

Annika Sorenstam became the second multiple winner on the LPGA Tour this season, winning the Stanford International Pro-Am and simultaneously punching her ticket to the season-ending ADT Championship. The 71-time Tour winner outlasted five-time winner Paula Creamer in the first playoff of the season, improving her career playoff record to 16-6. It was the first playoff of Creamer’s four-year LPGA Tour career. “I thought I played very well, and so did Paula. I know it came down to the last, well, it took 19 holes to separate us. It could have gone really any way,” Sorenstam said. “I’m just fortunate that this time it was my turn, and I’m going cherish this moment. Like I said, I felt like I played well the whole week. This is a big tournament on our schedule, and it meant a lot to me to come down the stretch there and hit some really crucial shots and finish strong.”
“It’s incredibly disappointing. You know, I had the lead for quite a while out there, and then I bogeyed and she had a birdie in there. It’s very disappointing,” Creamer said. “But at the same time, I’m going against on of the best players in the world that’s ever to play golf. There’s a lot to learn from that. This is was my first playoff as a professional, and probably the most nervous I’ve ever been.”
