Feb 16th 2008 Annika Sorenstam has won the 3 round SBS Open at Turtle Bay in Oahu Hawaii with a 2 stroke victory, and posts her 70th LPGA victory.
Annika who has not recorded a win on the LPGA Tour since The State Farm Classic in Sept 2006 was delighted with her performance, and said “I could not have asked for a better start. It’s very gratifying to see that the preparation I’ve done paid off and now I really want to put ‘07 behind and say, ‘Hey I’m a contender,’ and I intend to be that all year”.
This is Sorenstams’ first appearance at the SBS Open in Hawaii and was rewarded with a $165,000 paycheck.
Her first round was a 2 under par 70 which put her in a tie for 10th . The second round was a (-5) 67 and a tie for the lead with Erica Blasberg. The third round consisted of 1 bogey and 4 birdies on the way to carding a three under par 69. Her score was 70-67-69=206 (-10.).
Sorenstam was pleased with her birdie put on 17th and said “It was huge. It was one of those putts that I’m going to remember for a long time. It’s nice to have a one stroke lead going into 18. But to have two especially when it’s a par-5, a lot of players had birdies. Coming back like this, it’s nice to have a little extra cushion. So that was key.” In fact this week Annika hit 85% of her greens in regulation.
There were runner-up finishes for Park and Gulyanamitta who were playing because of their exempt status due to their strong performances at the 2007 LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.
Park drained an 80 foot birdie putt on the par 3 15th green. “(My caddy) said, as he was standing there tending the pin, you could see a line going-because my ball was going up over a hill and down the hill. He said right from the top of the hill, he could see the line of where my ball needed to go,” Park said. “I saw the exact line you needed to hit it. It was going straight down that line. A good thing was going to happen and I knew it.”
Gulyanamitta finished the event by holing a 48 foot birdie putt on the 18th green. She lost her card in 2004 when she was a tour rookie after only making 2 cuts in 15 starts. In that year she won just $4,411. In 2008 she has exempt status and has pocketed a check for $75,867 and a great start to the season.
